The Cleveland Shambhala Center presents Connecting the Dots...Yanas, Lineages and Dignities: A Community Practice Program on Lineage and Path Friday Evening, May 30, 2008, 7:30 p.m. Location: Cleveland Suggested Donation: $75.00 The lineages we have inherited -- Kagyu and Nyingma traditions and the Shambhala Warrior tradition -- interface with the stages of the path taught by the Buddha, as well as our own path, time and place. How do we understand these ancient traditions and how do we realize them in this modern world with technology, aging parents or young children, rent to pay and aspirations of love and security? A short program examining our personal journey in a larger context with talks, practice and discussion. About Acharya Eric Spiegel
Acharya Eric Spiegel has been teaching in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition for over 30 years. In addition to a 22-year career on Wall Street, Eric is know for his work with people with HIV and other life-threatening illnesses. Lately he has been teaching extensively on the topics of fearlessness in relating with Death and the place of "Wealth and Power" in spirituality. He is interested in exploring the nature of mind and meditation, not separate fro the hard complexities of "real life": How do we practice work, money, relationships, health, and aging while maintaining our windhorse and a forward vision about our life. Other Programs this Weekend with Acharya Spiegel:
Buddhist Vow Retreat Bodhisattva Vow Ceremony Refuge Vow Ceremony These vows are the essential steps of commitment to the path of dharma. First as we take Refuge in the Three Jewels -- the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha -- we acknowledge the suffering we have caused through our own ignorance and thus allow renunciation to arise in our being. We enter the path with dignity and longing for clarity. Gradually, our practice ripens further and we begin to sense that this suffering is not just our own, but that all sentient beings from beginning-less time have suffered needlessly due to their own non-awareness of Basic Goodness, the primordial potency of awakening. This dawning insight inspires us to do something meaningful, and to take a vow to work tirelessly towards the true blossoming of Bodhi, the path of practicing for the benefit of others. The Vow Retreat, for people intending to take Refuge or Bodhisattva Vows on Sunday afternoon, includes the Connecting the Dots program. Participation in the Vow Ceremony requires the written approval of a Shambhala Meditation Instructor. For those wishing to take vows, it is usually customary to offer a monetary teacher's gift or "dana." Please contact the Vow Program coordinator, Karen Jewell-Kett for more information, or speak to your meditation instructor. Karen can be reached by e-mail at "k.jewell-kett(at)csuohio.edu" or by phone at 440-376-9579.
